Everyday, Ava has been checking on her tomato plant. Anyone who comes over, she immediately wants to take out back to share how much her tomatoes are "growing." Occasionally we've been finding holes around it - dug up in neat burrows {still unsure what kind of critter is responsible...hmm....} But the tomatoes are still safe, and gardening has become one of Ava's favorite things to do. Today, they were riper than ripe... well one of them...

And after removing her first, she found another red-ripey one ready to be picked...

Sliced, zested with lemon, and sprinkled with salt - they were ready to eat... and appreciate how patience and nature takes care of each other... And our palettes!

Not being a big vegetable-eater nor great gardener myself, I'm so happy that our next generation is and will be...

  3. did you use tomato seeds or a small tomato plant? Teach me how to do this the next time we get thogether. I love her pic- she looks sweeter than the tomato. I was actually thinking of building a garden box with some wood - for the kids at grandma's house- what do you think?

  4. Wagma - we started out with a small tomato plant and just got some soil for vegetation. You could also do these in buckets (with holes at the bottom for drainage) and can be done simply by using a nail and hammer. This would be wonderful to do at Grandma's house - plus Dad could help tend to them while they are away.
